Facebook went offline for several users on Thursday, with the world's most preferred social media network telling individuals that "something failed".

When visiting Facebook.com, rather than seeing the normal homescreen or information feed, individuals were greeted with a blank display and also a brief error message.

" Sorry, something failed. We're working with it as well as we'll get it dealt with as quickly as we can," the message reads.

The failure started at around 5.30 pm BST but, for a lot of customers, showed up to have been fixed around 20 mins after.

Down Detector, which collates reports of prominent solutions being down, presented failures in the UK, Europe as well as the US.

The site decreased on Thursday afternoon and brief-ly appeared to function again for some customers.

A spokesperson for Facebook has said they are exploring what occurred.
